COURSE LEADER: MA CREATIVE DANCE EDUCATION

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Lead the ongoing development and delivery of the MA Creative Dance Education curriculum, ensuring it remains current, rigorous and responsive to sector developments.
- Embed critical engagement with pedagogy, policy, and global dance education contexts within the programme.
- Ensure coherence across units, with clear progression, alignment of learning outcomes, and integration of theory and practice.
- Oversee the design and development of placement-based learning, ensuring meaningful integration with the curriculum.
- Lead periodic review, enhancement and validation processes as required.
- Oversee alignment between the MA Creative Dance Education and undergraduate provision, including contribution to the delivery and development of the Education & Communities pathway on the BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance Performance course.

- Deliver high-quality teaching and learning, as appropriate to unit plans and your areas of expertise.
- Place the student at the centre, support student learning through regular tutorials as required.
- Ensure the programme meets institutional and external quality assurance requirements.
- Oversee assessment design, moderation and feedback practices to ensure consistency and clarity.
- Respond to student feedback (e.g. NSS, internal surveys, student voice mechanisms) and lead enhancements accordingly.
- Prepare reports and contribute to committees as required (e.g. Learning & Teaching Committee).

- Lead, manage, and support Unit Leaders and visiting lecturers in the planning and delivery of the programme.
- Ensure clarity of roles, expectations and communication across the teaching team.
- Contribute to staff development, mentoring and the sharing of good practice in teaching and assessment.
- Lead course team meetings and contribute to wider programme and school-level discussions.
- Oversee timetabling in collaboration with central teams.
- Work closely with academic administration and student support services to ensure effective programme delivery.
- Manage allocated budgets in line with institutional processes.
- Work closely with undergraduate course teams to ensure coherence and progression across the Education & Communities pathway and postgraduate study.

- Contribute to student recruitment, including admissions processes, interviews and outreach activity.
- Act as an ambassador for the programme, building relationships with external partners, organisations and practitioners.
- Develop and maintain partnerships that support high-quality placement opportunities.
- Ensure placements are effectively structured, supported and aligned with programme learning outcomes.

- Oversee the academic progress and pastoral support of students across the programme.
- Monitor student engagement, progression, and attainment, taking appropriate action where required.
- Foster an inclusive, supportive, and challenging learning environment that reflects diverse student needs and experiences.
- Support students in developing professional pathways across a range of dance education and participatory contexts.
- Undertake appropriate training to keep skills up to date and current (Mental Health First Aid, Prevent, Safeguarding, etc.).
- Work with colleagues to support students with disabilities or other special needs, adjust teaching materials and methods, seeking expert advice where required.
- Take responsibility for the Health and Safety of students and others conducting risk assessments as needed and seeking expert guidance where relevant.
- Ensure the maintenance of standards of student discipline on the course as detailed within the Student Handbook.

- Undertake a programme of Continuing Professional Development for review at annual appraisal.
- Mentor and support colleagues with less experience (including hourly paid staff) providing advice and guidance to their teaching practice and personal development.
- Participate in external networks relevant to your specialism (e.g. Dance Higher Education).
- Maintain a good level of IT proficiency in order to produce online assessment reports, Google Classroom materials, Excel data sheets and other written materials, and to undertake training as required.
- Promote cultures of external engagement, collaboration, and enterprise within the course and amongst the student and staff community.
- Foster collaborative exchanges with other departments across The Place, including Theatre and Artist Development, Classes & Courses, and Creative Learning.

- Attend and actively participate in LCDS and cross-organisation Meetings and Committees, and University of the Arts London Committees as required. Committee memberships include: LCDS Senior Management Team, Academic Board, Learning and Teaching Committee, LCDS Faculty Meetings, Year Group and Course Team meetings as required, Student Voice Committees, Link Liaison Committee.
- Undertake health & safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the role.
- Support and contribute to the course, the school and The Place’s external profile.
- Work and liaise with others with respect. Carry out all duties with regard for The Place’s Equity and Inclusion Principles, Equity, Diversity and Access Action Plan, Anti-Racist Action Plan, and Widening Access and Success strategies.
- Maintain a level of professional conduct in relation to attendance, time management, sickness/absence reporting, internal and external communications and completing workload allocation documentation.
- Maintain an awareness of The Place’s employment policies.
- Fulfil any other duties as may be reasonably required by the Chief Academic Officer.

This role supports the integration of research, practice, and teaching across the programme. Duties include to:
- Contribute to the wider research culture across The Place through practice, publication, or knowledge exchange activity.
There is the opportunity to request research allocation, following successful probation and, subject to institutional processes and priorities.
Applications for research active status will be prioritised based on:
- Successful PhD completion or evidence of a track record of producing high-quality scholarly and/or practice research outputs, with clear plans for continued output over the next two years.
- Experience of PhD supervision.
- A record of successful research funding applications and/or well-developed plans to submit funding bids.
- Research expertise in practice research and/or organisational priority areas, including place-making, technology/AI, creative health, and producing.
