DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
An exciting opportunity for an experienced fundraiser and development professional to join the dynamic and passionate Development Team at The Place, a world-leading dance organisation.
JOB OVERVIEW
The Development Team deliver transformational change in fundraising activities in order to support The Place to achieve its unprecedented vision for a 'world with more dance'. As we evolve our business model we have taken time to understand where the opportunities are in terms of sustainable future fundraising for The Place and, in particular, this role reflects our ambition to continue to grow individual giving. The Development Manager position is a key part of the team. Working with the Director of Development to meet the annual fundraising targets by:
- Leading on the cultivation and stewarding plans for individual giving including prospecting and cultivating high net worth individuals, managing the membership programme, delivering a portfolio of supporter events, and instigating a legacy giving campaign.
- Identifying opportunities and leading grant applications associated with the activities of London Contemporary Dance School and The Place Public Programmes.
- Meeting the evaluation and reporting requirements of funders.
- Supporting the upkeep of the fundraising database and financial records.

SALARY & CONTRACT TERMS
SALARY
The salary for this position is £37,000-£39,000 per annum depending on experience.
Salaries are reviewed in August each year when any cost-of-living increases are made. No salary changes are made until after successful completion of a probationary period.
CONTRACT TERMS
This is an open-ended permanent contract. This is a full-time position (equivalent to 40 hours per week). These hours are inclusive of a one-hour paid lunch break each day. Your hours of work will be agreed with the line manager.
Whilst in the six-month probationary period the notice period will be two weeks. Once this period is successfully completed the post holder will be confirmed in the post and the notice period will be eight weeks.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
SKILLS
- Excellent communication and presentational skills with the ability to communicate convincingly to a wide range of audiences (internal and external).
- Ability to undertake financial processes such as keeping budgets up to date.
- Excellent planning/organisational skills and good judgement.
- High level of attention to detail with proven ability to maintain a high standard of accuracy.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Empathy and experience with the charitable, cultural, and Higher Education fundraising landscapes.
- Experience of working closely with senior advocates to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects.
- Direct experience of making, managing, and evaluating trust and foundation applications and funding.
- Experience of event management.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA
KNOWLEDGE
- An understanding of charity regulations, compliance, GDPR, and legal and contractual requirements associated within fundraising.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience of working in a dance environment.
- Experience of working with fundraising databases such as Spektrix and Raisers Edge.
- Experience of successfully cultivating 6-figure gifts.
ATTRIBUTES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
- Well-networked within the Individual Giving sector.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
INDIVIDUAL GIVING
- Identify a pipeline of prospects to support the organisations artistic and education activities.
- Lead the development and delivery of creative and compelling cases for support from individuals as well as tailored cultivation plans.
- Design and deliver a schedule of innovative donor cultivation and stewarding events.
- Lead on the development of The Place’s Membership Programme.
- Found and deliver a Legacy Giving Programme.
- Build long–term relationships with supporters ensuring they are fully engaged and committed, that renewals are secured, and gift levels increased where possible.
- Work with the Director of Development to further develop the strategy for growing the donor pipeline and securing new gifts across all giving levels.
TRUST AND FOUNDATION FUNDRAISING
- Undertake appropriate research and networking to identify opportunities to fund activities across the organisation.
- Work cross-organisationally to develop a pipeline of realistic trust and foundation and statutory funder prospects.
- Work with the Director of Development on the writing and submission of grant applications.
- Coordinate the evaluation schedule and work cross organisationally to report on the progress at regular intervals and as required.
OTHER DONOR RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT
- Support on the cultivation and stewardship of Corporate supporters.
- Take ownership of relevant development enquiries (via post, email, website etc.) ensuring follow up is actioned as required.
- Ensure general thank you letters, and email templates are updated regularly and processed for all donors within an agreed timeframe.
ADMINISTRATION
- Support the maintenance of administrative systems for all income including recording the receipt of all gifts/pledges and tracking prospects.
- Manage agreed expenditure budgets.
- Support the upkeep of the fundraising database (Spektrix) and create data queries, run appropriate reports, and ensure records are kept up to date and cleaned.
- Ensure Gift Aid Declarations are recorded and up to date and Gift Aid is claimed annually.
- Support the Director of Development in developing quarterly board reports.
- Work with the Communications department to produce material to facilitate fundraising activity and regularly update the website.
OTHER DUTIES
- Attend events and performances at The Place as appropriate/required.
- Ensure compliance with GDPR.
- Keep up to date with current and future trends affecting philanthropy and donor recruitment, making recommendations that will inform our approach.
- Undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required.
