JOB OVERVIEW
The trainee role will work across all areas of the finance team to develop an understanding of the finance function. The trainee will be supported to develop the ability to process and understand financial transactions, maintain financial records, analyse and present data and develop finance reconciliation skills.
Training will be provided to ensure that the trainee is able to complete the work independently within a timely manner and develop finance skills in order to progress towards a finance qualification.

BURSARY AND CONTRACT TERMS
BURSARY
The bursary for this role is £23,806 per annum.
No bursary changes are made until after successful completion of a probationary period.
CONTRACT TERMS
This is a 12-month fixed-term, full-time trainee contract equivalent to 40 hours per week. Your exact working hours will be agreed with your line manager. Some hybrid working for this role is available, though it is expected that the trainee will work from the office at least 4 days per week most weeks.
Whilst in the six-month probationary period the notice period will be two weeks. Once this period is successfully completed the post holder will be confirmed in the post and the notice period will be four weeks.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Minimum of 5 GCSE’s at A-C, must include Maths
- IT literate
- High level of numeracy
- Strong skills in working as part of a team
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, commitment to providing excellent customer service to internal and external parties at all times
- Ability to use own initiative to resolve any issues or to manage the systems in a proactive and effective manner
- Efficient, organised, self motivated and able to focus on tasks in order to produce information to deadline
- Flexible with the ability to plan, prioritise and organise activities and tasks
- Keen to learn and develop finance skills within a busy team
DESIRABLE SKILLS
- Awareness/understanding of double entry, accruals, creating and amending journals, balance sheet reconciliations
- An interest in the Mission and Values of The Place
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
This role provides daily support to the Finance Supervisor with the management of all income and expenditure workflows for The Place, ensuring that processing, payments and reconciliations are completed as per agreed processes and within any service levels agreed with the business.
This role is also responsible for providing support to the Chief Financial Officer and Finance Business Partner with data reporting and analysis.
The role will also be required to provide support to other areas of the Business with data input or analysis as and when required.
EXPENDITURE
- Support the Finance Supervisor with posting and uploading of invoices into the finance system and statement reconciliations.
- Support with the preparation of payments to suppliers.
- Support with posting of credit card statements and expense claims.
- Monitor the Accounts Payable email inbox and respond to queries.
INCOME
- Support the Finance Supervisor with raising of sales invoices, production of monthly debtors statements, credit control.
- Support Student Finance & Data Officer Officer with posting and allocation of Student income.
- Assist the Student Finance & Data Officer with LCDS & CAT fees & reconciliation of departmental income.
MONTH END
- Posting journals to the system to correct errors and post adjustments.
- Support the Finance Business Partner and Finance Supervisor with Month end reconciliations and maintain accurate records.
- Support the Business Partner with the preparation of the management accounts where possible.
- Assist with production of transactions reports for Budget Holders.
BANKING
- Support the Finance Assistant with the reconciliation of all bank accounts, matching income and expenditure, allocating cheques, coding on a daily or weekly basis, ensuring that all bank accounts are fully reconciled by month end.
- Preparation of cash and cheques for banking.
CASHFLOW FORECASTING
- Prepare information to enable the Business Partner to produce regular cashflow forecasts.
DATA ANALYSIS
- Assist with the National statistics data analysis and submissions.
- Assist with any other data input as required by the Business.
GENERAL
- Monitor the Finance and Student Finance email inboxes and assist with responding to queries.
- Undertake any other ad hoc projects or work as directed by the Chief Financial Officer.
- Generate other ad hoc reports as required by the Finance Team or the Business in an accurate and timely manner.
- Build good communication channels with the rest of the Finance Team and share information which is relevant to your role and their roles and be able to provide cover in case of absence within the team.
