MARKETING MANAGER
An exciting opportunity for an experienced Marketing Manager to join our Communications team on a permanent basis, working across our Public Programmes.
The Place is a world renowned dance organisation. We present more than 120 performances a year in one of Europe's busiest dance theatres and support choreographers to create new dance works by commissioning and producing shows that are seen in London, across the UK and all over the world.
Reporting to the Head of Marketing: Public Programmes, the Marketing Manager will support the development, implementation and evaluation of marketing campaigns for our Public Programmes strand with a particular focus on the touring work produced by The Place and our Artist Development activity; as well as managing specific projects to drive greater engagement with our work.
Our Public Programmes include:
- Touring The Place’s produced work locally, nationally, and internationally
- Artist Development projects (including Choreodrome residencies, Artist Labs, Webinar Wednesdays, Stomping Ground, callouts and workshops).
- A partnership with the leading Rural Touring Dance Initiative (RTDI).
- Presenting approximately 50 companies per year in the theatre (including visiting work and The Place’s own commissions) and Resolution Festival.
- A programme of classes attracting over 30,000 children and adults each year.
- A Creative Learning programme for local communities.
Through our Producing & Touring programme and our Artist Development activity, we collaborate with some of the most exciting independent artists in the UK to bring unique and inspiring dance experiences to more people across the world. We embrace experiment and support artists and audiences to explore ideas that really matter today.
JOB OVERVIEW
The Marketing Manager will play a vital role in the Communications Team, leading on marketing campaigns for new work produced by The Place - from exploring audience development opportunities; to establishing the visual identity of productions and aligning messaging with the brand; ultimately attracting audiences to the venue and on national and international tours.
They will work with independent artists at different stages in their careers to profile Artist Development opportunities, the WorkPlace Artists programme and new work produced by The Place.
They will work closely with the rest of the Communications team on strategic projects that maximise opportunities to grow the reach, profile and loyalty for The Place in line with our brand values – for example, leading on the newsletter engagement strategy.
They will also work closely with our Projects Producers and Senior Producer in the Producing & Touring team, and with independent producers and creative freelancers, nurturing existing, and developing new relationships, with venues and partners of varying shapes and sizes across the UK and internationally.
SALARY & CONTRACT TERMS
SALARY
The salary for this position is £32,960 per annum.
Salaries are reviewed in August each year when any cost-of-living increases are made. No salary changes are made until after successful completion of a probationary period.
CONTRACT TERMS
This is an open-ended permanent contract. This is a full-time position (equivalent to 40 hours per week). These hours are inclusive of a one-hour paid lunch break each day. Your hours of work will be agreed with the line manager.
Whilst in the six-month probationary period the notice period will be two weeks. Once this period is successfully completed the post holder will be confirmed in the post and the notice period will be eight weeks.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
KNOWLEDGE
- Good understanding of marketing strategies and approaches for promoting live events.
SKILLS
- Budget planning and management (responding to change of circumstances when needed).
- Project management and marketing campaign management.
- Excellent IT literacy skills, including Microsoft Office 365, website content management systems, mail merge systems (e.g. DotDigital, MailChimp, etc.), ticketing systems and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems (e.g. Spektrix, Tessitura, etc.), and Content Management Systems (CMS) (e.g. Craft, WordPress, etc.).
- Ability to plan, prioritise and organise activities and tasks with an adaptable approach to managing workload in a busy environment.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience of managing marketing campaigns and delivery for theatre and/or dance (including mixed media, fill funnel marketing campaigns across print, digital, organic and paid socials, advertising, out of home, etc.).
- Experience working across a range of different projects simultaneously, balancing tasks, priorities and relationships with multiple artists accordingly.
- Experience in working to targets and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

- Good communication skills and written English, including copywriting skills for different medium and audiences.
- Excellent communication skills, with the empathetic interpersonal skills needed to work with a wide range of people including team members, independent artists and external partners.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of the UK regional small scale touring circuit.
- Knowledge of marketing for a production company, producing house or similar environment originating live performances.
- Established contacts within the UK dance and theatre touring circuit.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in campaign evaluation and analysis.
- Experience building and maintaining strong relationships, with the ability to work closely and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders both internally and externally at the same time.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
CAMPAIGN PLANNING
Producing and Touring
- Develop and manage marketing budgets for touring productions based on gathering knowledge from venues, learnings from previous tours, audience development plans outlined in project funding applications, and available resources.
- With the producers, and alongside the Press & PR Manager and Head of Marketing: Public Programmes, build strong working relationships with artists to ensure that their creative vision and audience intentions are woven into communications plans.
- Collaborate with the Head of Marketing: Public Programmes to establish the visual identity and key campaign messages for productions produced by The Place striving to reflect the artistic experience of the show and ensuring they are aligned with The Place’s brand and values.
- Develop each in-house productions’ overarching marketing timeline together with producers and creative teams, from the research and development (R&D) stage of a project to its premiere and tour.
- Regularly review marketing timelines with each project producer adapting to external factors like fundraising timeline and touring venues communication schedule.
- Stay up to date with marketing trends across social media, best practice, and equality and inclusion.
Artist Development
- Develop and manage marketing budgets for Artist Development projects. regularly reviewing the status of planned activity with the Artist Development Producer.
Rural Touring
- Collaborate with the Marketing & Digital Coordinator for National Rural Touring Forum (NRTF) and Rural Touring Dance Initiative (RTDI) to ensure rural touring activity is profiled on The Place’s digital channels including the website.
CAMPAIGN DELIVERY
Producing and Touring
- Lead the planning and delivery of agreed marketing campaigns for The Place productions on tour (including performances at The Place), reporting to the Head of Marketing: Public Programmes, and with support from freelance marketeers when required and agreed.
- Work with the Head of Marketing: Public Programmes, lead Producer and Artist/Company to develop marketing assets that communicate the work and celebrate the brand.
- With oversight from the Head of Marketing: Public Programmes, and additional freelance support when needed, manage promotional photoshoots, production images, the creation of digital and physical print materials, and other marketing assets required for touring productions.
- In collaboration with the Head of Marketing: Public Programmes, write and edit copy for promotional material, including for print, posters, advertisements, email, webpages, online posts and videos.
- Collaborate with the Digital Content Manager to support in the creation of digital content assets to be shared with programmers at the development stage and potential audiences at touring stage (e.g. trailer).
- Draft Letters of Agreement for creative freelancers, in line with the organisation’s processes.
- Manage relationships with suppliers of marketing goods and services (graphic designers, advertising agencies, photographers, and distribution companies, etc.), ensuring that The Place gets excellent service and value-for-money from its suppliers.
- Build strong working relationships with venue marketing teams on tour to maximise marketing potential and campaign impact.
- Ensure effective liaison between the Communications, Producing & Touring, and tour venues, including chairing meetings.
- Monitor ticket sales (collated by the Producing and Marketing trainee) modifying marketing activity in line with sales trends.
- Manage social media plans for specific campaigns including overseeing paid social media activity in collaboration with an external agency.
Artist Development
- Create marketing campaigns for Artist Development projects from researching opportunities to promote callouts to refining messaging always ensuring it aligns with our values.
- Manage onsales for Artist Development specific projects if separate from theatre onsales (e.g. Webinar Wednesdays).
- Monitor engagement / sales for Artist Development public events and callouts.
AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION
- Research and develop comprehensive Audience Development plans for Arts Council England Project Grant applications for artists and touring productions supported by the Producing & Touring team with detailed input from the lead producer, agreed lead times, a developed template, and a contractual requirement for touring venues to provide all necessary reporting data.
- Deliver against the plan when applications are successful and work closely with the lead producer to gather required data from tour venues.
- Evaluate marketing campaigns across Producing & Touring, and Artist Development, in line with agreed KPIs and the organisation’s Business Plan to measure success and inform future campaigns.
- Work with tour venues to collect audience and marketing campaign evaluation data for touring shows.
- Work with Director of Communications to establish a project template and deadlines for project evaluations.
PROJECTS
CRM Management - Dotdigital
- Establish a more strategic and joined up approach to messaging, scheduling, segmenting booker data, and evaluation engagement to maximise the efficiency and ROI of newsletters which continue to be the single most important direct sales driver.
- Collaborate with the Communications Manager (LCDS) to align activity as we also embed a new Recruitment CRM.
- Work with the Press & PR Manager and LCDS administrator to review templates internal and institutional newsletters
- Train new members of the Communications Team and other departments on the platform, and regularly report learnings to the wider communications team.
Brand Alignment
- Support the Director of Communications on a longer-term initiative to establish more opportunities to join Public Programmes with activity at LCDS.
- Establish and oversee a cross organisational merchandise committee.
- Ensure Dotdigital e-newsletter campaigns across the organisation are on brand.
OTHER DUTIES
- Along with the rest of the Communications team, ensure that The Place’s website is up to date and optimised.
- Attend touring productions, acting as ambassador of the work and The Place.
- Any other duties as may be reasonably requested by the Head of Marketing: Public Programmes.
